Ford Motor Company has a Stamping and Assembly plant in Hermosillo, Sonora, which was established since 1986. The plant has provided thousands of jobs to Sonorans and has helped achieve growth to the state.
On October 2003, Ford Motor Company announced its decision to expand its Hermosillo plant, in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, in which it would invest $1 billion USD. This project included the production of an automobile platform, CD3 which will serve three different Ford models: Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln Zephyr. In order to develop this project, suppliers from different parts of the world, including France, Canada, USA, and Germany have already established themselves around the Hermosillo Ford plant, forming a cluster. The production of the CD3 platform will start in August, 2005. However the expectations for 2006 are to produce around 300,000 vehicles per year on a three shift production basis!
