Tourists may visit the craters,
although they need a tour guide in order to take
them by a road named circuit, where the administration
limits vehicles to protect wildlife and to maintain
the place just the way it is.
El Pinacate is the highest peak in Santa Clara’s
volcano, and it has around 1.7 million years of
existence. The biosphere reserve “El Pinacate”
in the desert of Altar, is federally protected
by a program called SINAP (National system of
Protected Natural Areas). There are two nucleus
zones, one where no activities are allowed: they
are used only for investigation and some people
live in the rest of the zone. 80% of the land
is occupied by ejidos or common lands and 20%
is federal property. Residents are allowed to
practice settlement, commerce, and farming as
long as they respect regulations.
The vegetation in El Pinacate and the Altar Desert
is made up of primarily xerophilic bushes, although
in some restricted areas there may be found hard
wood trees, mesquite trees and maroon bushes.
There are close to 500 species of plants, which
greatly contribute to the high biological value
of El Pinacate. The above mentioned species are
divided into ten principal regions: Sonoyta, the
Highlands of El Pinacate, the Lowlands of El Pinacate,
the Sea Craters, the Granite Sierra, the Rosario
Sierra, the Dunes, the Desert Plains, the Coastlines,
and the Rainy areas.
El Cedo
This area emerged by a unity of the shrimp aquaculture
that was managed by the University of Arizona
and University of Sonora in the 80s. It is used
as a camp station for an entertainment center
and an office for shells subdivision. It was donated
to the foundation of desert development; in 1987
this foundation was rebuilt as two anti-profitable
organizations, one in México and other
in the United States with the purpose of promoting
scientific investigation, education, and conservation.
