 History - Ciudad Obregón
History

The actual territory of Ciudad Obregon’s municipality, Cajeme, forms part of the Yaqui region. The region began to be evangelized by Jesuit missionaries since 1617.

The municipality of Cajeme has as municipal heading the city of Obregon. Ciudad Obregon is located at the south of Sonora by the fertile and well irrigated Yaqui Valley, and is then, the agricultural center of the state.

This modern city has its roots in the villages of Cumuripa, Buenavista, and Cocorti, back in the 19th Century when cultivation of land started to develop. Today the region is a showcase of advanced agricultural techniques and is the headquarters of one of the finest agricultural experimental stations for development of new breeds of crops.

Proud of its past and confident about its future, Ciudad Obregon awaits with the proverbial Sonoran hospitality.
