Agua Prieta started raising by
1901 when the construction of the railroad from
Douglas, "Its Sister City", to the Nacozari
mine began.
This unexpected boom generated by the copper
extraction, also helped those who worked near
the rail tracks, finding many chances to provide
themselves with merchandise and to take their
production, especially cattle, seeds and grains
to trade centers. This movement encouraged the
growth of the recently born town called Agua Prieta.
Years after, in 1920, Agua Prieta was involved
in the Revolution War and here the document called
"The Agua Prieta Plant" was accepted
and signed by the Sonoran generals disapproving
Venustiano Carranza's government.
In the 1970’s the city became a center
for the Maquiladora industry. The decade of 1980’s
saw growth for the Maquiladoras, as well as other
legal exporting operations. By the 1990’s,
Agua Prieta’s growth increased as a result
of United States’ escalation of border enforcement
activities.
Tourists from many states of the U.S.A. consider
this frontier town as a special gate to get easy
enjoyment from Sonora, and Mexican culture as
well.
